Jaisalmer to Sam Sand Dunes: How to Get There
Sam Sand Dunes is about an hour from Jaisalmer. The route, four ways to travel, what each costs, and when to leave so you reach the dunes by sunset.
Most people book a desert camp in Jaisalmer the same way: they search, they see forty listings with near-identical photos of a camel at sunset, and they pick whichever one looks cheapest. Then they arrive and discover the camp is nowhere near the dunes, the “cultural programme” is a speaker playing music off a phone, and dinner ran out by 9 pm.
It doesn’t have to go that way. We’ve been running camps at Sam Sand Dunes for years, and this guide is the honest version — where the camps actually are, what a night genuinely costs, what’s worth paying extra for, and what isn’t.
“Desert camp in Jaisalmer” is a slightly misleading phrase. There are no camps in Jaisalmer city itself. The camps sit in two clusters outside it, and the difference between them matters more than most booking sites admit.
This is the main dune belt and the reason most people come to the Thar in the first place. Sam has the tall, sculpted sand dunes you’ve seen in photographs, the biggest concentration of camps, and the liveliest evenings — folk music, Kalbeliya dance, dinner buffets, dune bashing in the late afternoon.
The trade-off is that Sam is busy, especially between October and March. If you want the desert to yourself, this isn’t it. If you want the full Rajasthani desert-night experience with music, food and a crowd, it is exactly it.
Khuri is quieter, smaller and more village-oriented. The dunes are lower and more scattered. Camps tend to be simpler and the evenings calmer. Travellers who want silence and stars over spectacle often prefer it.

Camps in Jaisalmer are usually sold as a package, not a room rate. A standard overnight package almost always covers:
What’s usually not included: transport from Jaisalmer city, alcohol, dune bashing in a 4×4, quad biking, paragliding, and any private or extended safari.
That last point catches people out. Many advertised prices assume you’re arriving under your own steam. If you don’t have a vehicle, ask about pickup before you book, not after.
Our current package inclusions and prices are listed here: Desert Camp Packages & Tariff
Camp websites use words like “deluxe”, “royal” and “luxury” with no shared definition. Here’s what those tiers usually mean in practice at Sam:
| Tier | What you typically get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard / Swiss tent | Twin or double bed, attached basic bathroom, running water, fan | Budget travellers, one-night stays |
| Deluxe tent | Larger tent, better bedding, attached bathroom with geyser, sitting area | Couples, families wanting comfort |
| Luxury / Royal tent | Spacious interiors, premium furnishing, private sit-out, sometimes AC | Honeymooners, longer stays, winter comfort |
Two questions worth asking any camp before you pay:
Fill in before publishing: our own tent categories with current tariff — [Standard ₹____ / Deluxe ₹____ / Luxury ₹____ per couple per night].
Prices swing hard with season, so any single number is misleading. Broadly:
The biggest hidden cost is transport. A round trip from Jaisalmer city to Sam and back can add meaningfully to the total, and taxi rates on the dunes road at night are not negotiable in your favour.

October to March is the answer for almost everyone. Days are warm and clear, nights are cool, and the camps are running at full strength — full cultural programmes, full kitchens, full atmosphere.
December and January get cold at night, sometimes near freezing on the dunes. Bring a jacket. Camps provide quilts, but the wind after sunset surprises people.
February brings the Jaisalmer Desert Festival to Sam Sand Dunes — camel races, turban-tying competitions, folk performances. It’s the best week of the year to be here and the hardest week to get a tent. Book a month ahead, minimum.
April to August is hot. Genuinely hot. Some camps close or run reduced operations. If you come in this window, do the safari at first light or after 5 pm and nothing in between.
The road from Jaisalmer city to Sam Sand Dunes is a straightforward drive on a good highway, roughly an hour depending on where you start.

Full transport guide with routes, timings and costs: How to Reach Sam Sand Dunes from Jaisalmer City
Is a desert camp in Jaisalmer safe for families with children? Yes. Camps at Sam are family-oriented, with staff on site through the night, catered food and short, supervised camel rides. Children under a certain age are usually accommodated free with parents — check the specific camp’s policy.
Can I stay just for the evening without an overnight? Yes. Most camps sell a “day visit” or “evening package” covering the safari, cultural programme and dinner, without the tent. It’s a good option if you have a night train out.
How many nights should I stay? One night suits most travellers. Two nights makes sense if you want a sunrise safari, a slower pace, or a longer camel ride into the deeper dunes.
Is there mobile network and electricity? Electricity yes, at all established camps. Mobile signal is workable at Sam but not reliable. Treat it as a place to be off-grid for a night.
Do I need to book in advance? In peak season and during the Desert Festival, absolutely. Off-season you can often walk in, but you’ll have less choice of tent.
The short version: pick Sam if you want the classic desert night with dunes, music and atmosphere; pick Khuri if you want quiet. Book October–March if you can. Confirm your transport before you confirm your tent. And ask about the bathroom and the geyser.
