Almost every price you see quoted for a Jaisalmer desert camp is incomplete. Not dishonest, usually — just missing the two or three things that turn an advertised rate into what you actually hand over.
This page lays out the full picture: what a package rate covers, what it doesn't, what the extras cost, and how much the season moves the number. Our own rates are here too, so you can compare like for like.
Camps here sell packages, not room rates. That's the first thing to understand, because a ₹ figure per couple usually already includes dinner and a safari — which makes it look expensive next to a plain hotel room, and cheap next to a hotel plus meals plus an activity.
A standard overnight package almost always includes:
Included in an overnight package
Standard across established camps at Sam Sand Dunes.
This is where budgets go wrong. None of the following is normally in the headline price:
Paid separately
Our current charges. Ask any camp for theirs in writing before you book.
The one people forget is transport. If you've arrived by train without a vehicle, getting to the dunes and back is a real cost, and a taxi negotiated at 5 pm on the dunes road will never be in your favour. Sort it before you leave the city.
Rates are per couple per night and include everything in the first list above.
Tent categories
Peak season rates. See the season bands below for other months.
October to March
Highest rates, and weekends higher again. Camps fill weeks ahead. Desert Festival week in February is the hardest booking of the year.
September and April
Noticeably cheaper and still comfortable. Days are warm, nights are fine, and the dunes are far quieter at sunset.
May to August
Lowest rates of the year, but daytime heat regularly crosses 45°C. Safaris run at first light and after 5 pm only.
The gap between a February weekend and a June weekday is large — often the difference between two categories of tent. If your dates are flexible, September and late March are the value windows: shoulder pricing, peak-season weather.
Aggregator listings carry a commission that ends up in the rate. Booking with the camp itself usually costs less and, more importantly, means you're talking to the people who will actually be there when you arrive.
At the very cheapest end, it sometimes means shared. It's the single most common cause of a bad night here. Ask directly, and ask whether there's a geyser — between December and February, hot water isn't a luxury.
Dune bashing and quad bikes are sold on the spot, at sunset, when everyone else is doing it. Know what you want beforehand and the evening costs what you planned.
Covered above, but it bears repeating, because it's the largest avoidable cost of the trip.
Deciding between locations before you compare prices? Our Sam vs Khuri comparison covers what differs between the two dune areas — and our complete guide to desert camps in Jaisalmer covers seasons, tent categories and what to pack.
Almost always per couple per tent, with a separate charge for an extra person sharing. If a quote looks unusually low, check which one it is before you compare it with anything else.
Most camps take an advance to hold the booking, especially in peak season, with the balance on arrival. Keep some cash with you — card acceptance on the dunes is patchy and the network drops out.
Yes, and some are perfectly good. The ones to be careful with are those advertising a rate well below everything else — the saving usually comes out of the bathroom, the food, or the safari length.
In peak season, yes. Friday and Saturday nights carry higher rates at most camps at Sam. A Tuesday in the same week can be meaningfully cheaper for the same tent.
An evening package covers the safari, cultural programme and dinner without the tent, so it comes in below a full overnight stay. It suits travellers with a night train out of Jaisalmer.
Rates move with the season and the day of the week. Send us your dates and how many of you there are, and we'll come back with the actual number, including transport, so there's nothing to work out on arrival.
