Written by the team at Sam Sand Dunes Desert Safari Camp. Updated September 2026.
If you've spent an hour comparing desert camps near Jaisalmer, you've hit the same fork everyone hits: Sam Sand Dunes or Khuri?
Both are roughly the same distance from the city. Both offer camel rides, tents and a folk performance after dinner. The listings look interchangeable. They aren't — and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people come away disappointed with a night in the Thar.
We run a camp at Sam, so read this knowing where we sit. We've still tried to be straight about what Khuri does better, because sending the wrong traveller to Sam helps nobody.
Book Sam if…
This is your first time in the Thar, you want tall dunes, folk music, a full dinner and a lively evening — or you're travelling with children.
Book Khuri if…
You've seen the desert before, you want silence and stars over spectacle, and a crowd at sunset would spoil it for you.
That's genuinely most of the decision. The detail is below.
| Sam Sand Dunes | Khuri | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Jaisalmer | About 40–45 km west | About 45–50 km south-west |
| Drive time | Around an hour | Around an hour |
| Dune scale | Tall, sculpted, classic desert dunes | Lower, flatter, more scattered |
| Crowd level | Busy, especially October to March | Quiet through the year |
| Choice of camps | Many, across every budget | Fewer, mostly simple |
| Evening programme | Folk music, Kalbeliya dance, fire show | Smaller, often one group of musicians |
| Food | Large buffets, veg and non-veg | Simpler, home-style village cooking |
| Activities | Camel safari, jeep dune bashing, quad bikes, paragliding | Camel safari, village walks |
| Tent standards | Standard through to luxury and AC | Mostly basic to deluxe |
| Suits | First-timers, families, groups, photographers | Solo travellers, repeat visitors, quiet seekers |
This is the part booking sites blur.
Sam sits on the edge of a proper dune belt. The sand rises in tall, wind-carved ridges — the kind you climb, sit on, and watch the sun drop behind. It's the landscape in almost every photograph of the Thar you've seen, including the ones some Khuri camps use in their own listings.
Khuri's dunes are lower and more broken up, with more scrub between them. It's a beautiful, softer landscape, and the village setting has real character. But if your mental image is a wall of golden sand at sunset, Khuri can read as underwhelming when you arrive.
If dune photography is a reason for your trip, Sam is the straightforward choice.
Sam gets busy. On a Saturday in December there will be dozens of jeeps on the dunes at sunset, camel trains crossing each other, and music from three camps at once. Some travellers find that fun. Others find it the opposite of what they came to the desert for.
Khuri is genuinely quiet. Fewer camps, fewer vehicles, less noise after dark. If you want to hear nothing but wind, that's where you'll find it.
Worth knowing: the crowds at Sam sit inside a two-hour window around sunset. By 10 pm, once the programme ends, most camps go quiet and the dunes empty. Stay overnight rather than doing an evening visit and you get the atmosphere and the silence — just not in the same hour.
People assume Khuri is much cheaper. In practice the gap is smaller than expected, for two reasons.
First, Khuri has fewer camps, so there's less price competition at the budget end. The sheer number of camps at Sam pushes entry-level rates down.
Second, Khuri sits slightly further from the city, which nudges up transport — and transport is the line item most people forget to budget for.
Where Khuri does save you money is on extras. There simply aren't as many things to spend on. At Sam, dune bashing, quad biking and paragliding are all sold on site and add up quickly.

Yes, and it makes a good two-night plan: one night at Sam for the full desert evening, one at Khuri to slow down. The drive between them is manageable, though you'll want a private vehicle rather than local transport.
Most travellers on a standard Rajasthan itinerary only have one night. In that case don't split it — pick one and do it properly.

Less touristy isn't automatically better. Sam has more camps because it has the better dunes and better infrastructure. Khuri is the right choice if quiet is your priority, not because it's inherently superior.
Sam is marginally closer, but the difference is small enough that drive time from the city is roughly the same either way.
Broadly similar in length and price. The ride at Sam crosses taller dunes. The Khuri ride passes more village and scrub landscape.
Camps at Sam generally serve larger buffets with more choice, including non-veg. Khuri tends toward simpler home-style Rajasthani cooking, which some travellers prefer.
At established camps, yes. At the budget end in both locations, confirm before booking. An attached bathroom and a geyser are the two things worth checking explicitly, especially between December and February when nights get cold.
If you're deciding between camps for a specific set of dates, tell us what you're after and we'll say honestly whether Sam is the right fit.
